Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ross Labs, LLC standard warranty period?

Ross Labs manufactures its products to a very high standard and each unit must pass a series of quality assurance tests prior to shipment. Our standard warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for a period of one year from date of delivery.

What software works best with Ross Labs survey systems?

All of our survey systems can interface with Hypack™, Chesapeake™, Quincy™ and Carris™ software. Our products can also interface with proprietary software packages.

Can I charter the Golden Dolphin to test my own underwater equipment?

Yes! The Golden Dolphin can also be leased for conducting marine research work, transporting live fish, AUV – ROV operations and performing deep water surveys. If required, the Golden Dolphin has onboard lab space equipped for hydrographic survey. Deck equipment includes a 1.5 ton hydraulic crane for equipment handling and temporary overboard mounting of transducers. There is also a cable winch/overboard boom that can be used for dropping instrument packages. Both day and extended charter rates are available.

What do the colors represent on the 825 and 835 scrolling screen?

The colors represent the signal strength or voltage level of the return echo. The colors at the top of the color bar, typically red, represent high signal strength and the colors at the bottom of the color bar, typically blue or purple, represent low signal strength.

When is a multi-channel sweep system preferable to the multi-beam system?

In shallow water. Because the transducers are at a fixed spacing in the Multi-channel system the foot print of the system does not change due to water depth. So, there is a depth where the coverage of the multi-channel system is greater than the multi-beam system. This depth is dependent on the number of channels and transducer spacing of the multi-channel system.

How many channels are available on the multi-channel sweep system?

Ross can configure a sweep system from 3 to 24 channels. An 875-X system with over 8 channels (max 16 channels) and the 4810 transceiver with over 12 channels (max 24) require an expansion box.

What Hypack™ driver do I use for the multi-channel sweep system?

The “Ross Smart Sweep” driver or smartswp.dll. Remember that the serial port parameters (baud rate, parity, stop bits, etc.) need to match in both the sounder and Hypack™.

What Hypack™ driver do I use for the 825/835?

The “Ross Smart Echosounder (Serial)” driver or rossmart.dll. You also need to confirm that the 825/835 is configured to output the “Ross Single” sentence. Remember that the serial port parameters (baud rate, parity, stop bits, etc.) need to match in both the sounder and Hypack™.

Why can’t the sounder see the bottom in turbulent water?

The air - water interface is one of the best reflectors of sound energy. Therefore, the sound energy transmitted by the transducer is reflected and scattered by the air bubbles suspended in the water column and the sound energy doesn’t reach the bottom with sufficient strength to return from the bottom. Switching to manual gain control and or selecting the long transmitter pulse width will help but not eliminate the problem.

Sometimes my soundings appear erratic when I am sounding in vegetation.

Marine plant life contains a lot of air. Air reflects and scatters the sound energy produced by the sounder. So, sometimes the sounder is seeing the bottom and other times it is seeing the plant life. Switching to manual gain control and or switching between short and long transmitter pulse width will help but not eliminate the problem. If the plant life is significantly higher than the bottom, careful use of the blanking control setting it between the actual bottom depth and top of the plant layer will help to avoid digitizing on the plants themselves.

I need to perform a bar check. Is there a tool I can use to make this easier?

Conducting a sound velocity or “bar check” procedure for single beam and multi-channel surveys has always been a somewhat dangerous and laborious task. The D5150 Ball Check system greatly simplifies this task.

How do I contact Ross Labs for support or technical questions?

If you prefer, you can click here to ask questions and one of our helpful technicians will respond to your inquiry. You may also call us during working hours at (425)771-0665. In addition, all of our licensed representatives offer after-sale support.

What are the footprints for various beam angles?

3.5 degree :
1.8feet (.55 m) at 30 foot water depth
3.7 feet (1.13 m) at 60 foot water depth

10 degree:
5.25 feet (1.60 m) at 30 foot water depth
10.5 feet (3.20 m) at 60 foot water depth.

What are the max ranges for various frequencies?

200kHz = 450 feet, 150m.
100kHz = 900feet, 300m.
50kHz = 2400feet, 750m.
28kHz = 5,000feet, 1500m.

How does the wavelength for various frequencies determines resolution?

1 wavelength in inches = 57,600
Frequency in Hertz
Example: for 200kHZ 57,600 equals .288 inches (0.73152 cm)
200,000

Where can I find bathymetric and hydrographic data?

NOAA's hydrographic and bathymetric data is available from National Geophysical Data Center.

Where can I find hydrographic information for inland lakes and rivers?

NOAA's Office of Coast Survey primarily surveys U.S. Coastal waters. The U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers survey inland rivers and waters.

Where can I find information on tides and currents?
